Welcome to the JustFreestyle channel. Today, an special episode with an spiecial guest who is fresh from this year’s championship Red Bull Street Style The world champion in 2011 and 2013 - Szymon Skalski - Hi Szymo - Hi Brzezik I’m glad you agreed to give this interview, due to the pandemic we are conducting the interview online, but interestingly this year’s Red Bull Street Style World Championship was also online and I would like to ask you at the beginning how the elimination and, above all, the finals was like from the competitor’s perspective because this is something new and I think very interesting yes Well it was completely new, a completely new experience for us for the players because the whole tournament took place in five individual stages in the first stage of qualification, in which participant of over 600 people took part, of which half were eliminated 200 in the next round you had to present your set about 30 seconds later there was musically and then there was a stage where we got Tricks We had to use the tricks in our live set live from this stage, one more stage was where we were to present our signatures and creativity and only after that stage 16 were selected, which was battling on the live stream for the first time in history, these were battles that took place online via live stream you went to Warsaw to some designated places and everyone in the world had a battle yes, the local red bull just made sure that we had a good live stream, to ensure good video quality, good sound quality, so that the internet was fairly okay It was a great thing because we went to Warsaw with Aguśka and I stayed there for 3 days we had a studio at our disposal so we trained there for these 2 days on the last day on sunday the third day we just had the finale in a few people somewhere behind the camera there were people from lighting and sound from the entire live stream so cool because there was a very positive vibe I wanted to ask about this vibe, if you would compare it to a tournament in front of the audience… it makes me wonder if there was music while playing, were you supposed to have contact with the opponent, or did you see how he played because you know… from the perspective of the live stream it looked like we watched your actions and I don’t know what it looked like from the stage We saw each other, we could even wave to each other, congratulations but we didn’t hear each other. we only heard a commentator from Studio just giving us signals How much time we have left and that there is a change However, I would rather perform on stage because I do not know how other people’s music was so poorly heard that I just did not know what beat I was playing I had absolutely no idea and Well this is such a strange feeling as there is no music you can’t feel you just don’t feel this climate and you can actually see yourself with this opponent on this screen Well, you can’t show me anything, you can’t look him in the eyes, so it’s a little bit different that we’re used to, but it’s definitely an interesting experience with something new How do you comment on your battle with Erlend because you have already won with him once in 2018 I wonder what was going on in your head, did you experience any stress or maybe you prepared yourself mentally because the first round was great. But in the second round there were some mistakes Yes, I had the first ascent prepared, and it did not work out the way it was supposed to, because there was supposed to be one more trick there unfortunately I didn’t have enough time so I didn’t put it there at all and in the second set I wanted to get him with my signature, i.e.
start combo with SZATW 04:30 - and then I had a couple of 2revs and a lot of nt. Was all in the warm-up so I figured I would I knew that I have a lower one and that it might be ok. I wanted to do a combo throughout the round. Well, somewhere this ball flew to me and there was an avalanche of mistakes. it was simply impossible to make up for, and it was obvious that Erlend was already playing at ease because he can do much more, but he knew that he was winning, so he already acted securely so that it all came out but to be honest I was very happy to have a battle with him because it’s great that if you win these competitions, win with the best of course, so I was not trying to fail here because he is the best in the world no, I do not expect to fail. I wanted to show him good Freestyle. Well, unfortunately, I burned myself a bit here in this battle but I’m not angry with myself at all because I know that a lot of people wrote to me that I presented myself well that they liked that the first set was crazy I am very happy that I was able to come back to Red Bull after 6 years because it is already 6 years that I have not participated in this tournament And I’m really glad that I managed to get into the Top 8 because I’m 30 years old and I train 15 years and it’s not so easy to be motivated all the time to be at a good level I’m also very happy and I’m starting really murderous trainings now at this point to come back to the competitions and to show me what I can do again and again Interestingly, from what I remember from another interview with Erlend, he emphasized that you are his great inspiration and so you could say that indirectly this is your pupil And suddenly you have a common battle here I saw it and it was probably in your interview with Erlend Yes, it was in 2016 yes yes, he was telling about it in fact that I was an inspiration for them Anyway, I could notice in Erlend in his game that he sometimes received my patents for tricks At this point, he has reworked a lot of these tricks and is already playing his moves he was giving something new and he is on a crazy level that’s why when I had a battle with him, I also wanted to do some of my tricks which I know he uses and I wanted to surprise him with it, but it didn’t quite work out next time Do you think someone will stop these amazing Norwegians one day? Yes, I think for sure.
If we are afraid and we think everyone is God, we will not be able to compete with him. You have to be self-confident and train and prepare Speaking of self-confidence, you have a lot of tournaments behind you and you are a freestyler known for performing very difficult tricks during battle and this requires, in my opinion, incredible concentration and such impeccable self-confidence and it is very easy to drop the ball with stress and other factors I just wanted to ask what advice do you have to deal with tournament pressure? Do you have any way to prepare for it or are you working on your confidence? or are they rather worked out tricks? I think that if you feel well prepared for the tournament and have worked and trained conscientiously, you really have this confidence because you know that you can perform these tricks and here only some small details can do something negative. For example, before a competition, some negative conversation or some negative impulse can knock you out of it, but if you actually prepare your conscience, You keep on a diet, train twice a day and so on, I think you feel confident and you just know what for you can afford, you know what you can do and you do it from the machine, you just try to fly in and you don’t think about making a mistake then, departing from the topic of Red Bull, let’s move on to the topic of training. You are a freestyler who can be said to come from the first generation of freestylers, that is, after 30 years of age. You already mentioned this topic to us. And I am very impressed that from these 15 years of freestyle you still have an amazing form and what’s more, you are still getting better.
09:29 - The question is: what is the key to this success? You complimented me here, cool, thank you. Is the key to success…? I just enjoy the training so much. For me it is great fun that I can go out to training I can train myself to break my barriers doing something new even after so many years land some new trick that I have never done before and it is, above all, the greatest joy, fun and satisfaction. This is what freestyle gives me that I can explore, get to know my body and see what I can do. This is a beautiful thing, so first of all, let’s do it for ourselves and have fun because if it is a real passion, we must enjoy it, we must be delighted that we do these tricks. Do you feel any changes in your body? I don’t know…
maybe you tire faster or get hurt? 10:35 - Because after the age of 30 something changes in the body You’re right, it’s a little bit so that somewhere, sometimes I feel more tired, I need more regeneration, that’s why I talk to other freestylers With Ziomal and Amsti, with all the other buddies who are just over 30, we found that it would be a good idea to take care of yourself a little better. You know, take care of your diet, stretch a little more, then warm up. I also load a lot of dietary supplements, so I also have good support for muscles. And I try to take care of my body, I also meditate, read and work on my head. I think that all this combined gives good results and I hope that there are many years ahead of us.
11:31 - So full development not only with the ball I think the head plays a huge role here I just wanted to ask you about these issues, that training not only with the ball, how do you combine it with the gym…? maybe the question is, are you improving your freestyle skills and abilities with strength training? I just treat the fitness gym as my second passion, I always liked it somewhere and I tried to build my body all the time I do it because it turns me on. I like to do it and mentally it just gives me a little more confidence and strength when I do a good workout I’m so tall somewhere the muscles are stimulated then I feel better on freestyle, I know that I did some training in the morning I did a bit of a start if this the training is satisfactory is good Well, I am so motivated that I tell myself: you have this power, now you enter freestyle And the same way you put all your strength. And I do not combine it with freestyle at all, I am not saying that the gym helps me with my skills, because at the gym I focus more on the upper body, because some years ago in the gym I tried leg exercises and then freestyle I had a lot of problems because my knees were a lot of stress, same with acrobatics somewhere in 2008, 12 years ago, I was doing a back flip and it was a bit too much, too much intensity, my legs started to hurt. So I quit the gym for legs and just do intensive Freestyle training.
13:32 - And it helps me, it’s a good leg training, a really good leg training, abdominal training… In fact, at this point of everything. Somewhere I also stand on my hands so many hours a day I do JordanStall. The gym is just such a morning accessory I just wanted to ask a question about LOWER. It is a demanding style that requires a lot of strength and fresh legs. How does it look like with you? Do you train LOWER every day at maximum intensity and try to land the best combinations? Or maybe you focus on the regeneration of your legs and take breaks between workouts from LOWER with maximum intensity? after few LOWER training, I take a break from training, because it is impossible to more, this level requires regeneration at some point.
14:27 - As I plan every day for an hour and a half, my level goes up, and at some point it stops and even drops because you just feel exhausted. Really, 2 sometimes 3 days refresh the legs completely so that afterwards it feels like it should and then you really see the progress in my opinion when you don’t train - the progress is increasing. When you go back to training, you can see that I have made progress. I like to torture myself like that, do a hard LOWER training. To the point where I really feel tired and need a break.
15:03 - I am reluctant to take this break because I love LOWER training, but I know that when I come back after this break on such a freshman, I will have mega power and usually it is. Well, just like building muscles, lifting weights, you tire this muscle, but when you regenerate, it only grows. - And the same is true of progress in LOWER. - Exactly. That’s what I was wondering. How often do you train, because when I looked at your videos, I had the impression that you train LOWER every day Try. But it is known that it is impossible and you need to rest. You can make some SD or upper.
Maybe not because these legs are very walking, so more SD or some things lying down 15:51 - or to tire hands, JordanStall recently I heard that ricardinho is such a madman. At the Super Ball, where he won this morning, I was awakened by a stomp. I look out the window and here Ricardinho is still training. Wow, what are you talking about? I don’t know, he seems to have amazing endurance. But in my opinion, this is a great thing - to do a workout in the morning and then rest for many more hours, maybe even sleep a little, and when you play the second time it usually is.
I don’t know if you have that, 16:44 - if you play in the morning and then in a few hours you play in the evening, then you have an amazing feeling and everything turns out fine. Usually, I feel weak during the qualifying round, but the day after the finals or the next stages are over, I have a much better feeling of the ball. that’s how it usually is, so I guess that’s a good tactic. I have also been for some time now, if I only have the opportunity, I like to do two freestyle sessions a day. The first training session is calm for an hour.
And the second training is really hardcore 17:17 - and the latter is also usually so long? no no, the second usually yes about three hours even more. Which is a total of almost 5 hours a day goes out well, I train 5 hours a day, now it happened before the competition, because I figured I had to catch up with my level because I was very much behind in freestyle. A lot of things happened in life, somewhere in the past, the whole year was ineffective. In the second half of September I started to train as I should, and to prepare for the competition. So I think that for these two months it is pretty good, and what will be in a few months, next year, I think if I manage to keep this intensity of training and take care of yourself nice, it will be a real firecracker.
I am rediscovering my potential now and I am very happy in training. Well, let there be as many freestylers as possible who will be freestyle for so long. I am also going to play as long as possible after 30 years old, I am starting to wonder how to keep my health and my shape in order to play as long as possible. So I don’t want to do it the same. Dont lost of motivation too yes, first of all, as you said, when you love what you do, you are motivation for yourself. Of course. Although sometimes you know there are worse days, a man is somehow depressed and he doesn’t feel like anything, but everyone has some way to motivate themselves. I like reading books for example.
It motivates me, I like to watch videos of some Olympians who break world records 19:08 - Recently I was watching a documentary about Michael Jordan, I don’t know if you watched? I did not watch, but I heard it’s good. I recommend it to you, it motivates you. “The last dance” yeah? Yes Yes It’s great to listen to Michael Jordan, what he had in mind, what was his approach. He was a titan of work, a man of success. I will definitely watch Okay, that’s the last question. What’s next? Are you going to fight for the world championship again? How do you see your future? First of all, I would like to come back to the competition because now I got such a motivational kick and somewhere back to me to compete. I would like to prove a few more things on stage, because I am not entirely satisfied with what I have done in the international arena and I would like…
although this is not my main goal - I will not reveal what it is here, 20:16 - but I would like to do something in the freestyle environment, inspire people and new generations, and certainly leave something behind in this sport. I am sure that I will be actively watched on this stage for many years to come Well, I wish you good luck and I strongly believe that it will succeed. Well, a man with such passion and determination can do anything. If I quit now it would be the biggest mistake in my life. Yeah, it’s too late to back out. Of course it is, there is no turning back Thank you very much for the interview Many thanks, Brzezik It was an interview with Szymon Skalski, write in the comments who you would like to watch the next interview with.
21:05 - Thank you very much once again Thank you very much too And if you want to become a world champion and train after the age of 30, remember, just train. Exactly. Train hard Goodbye .
