Today I want to show you this interesting monopod that will help you take 360 videos and photos leaving the smallest footprint. You will learn how to go from this… to this, only 15º footprint, thus optimizing your post-production flow. And I’ll tell you how I made this 360 video without the slightest hint of a tripod. When we think of the equipment to take 360 photography, in addition to the camera, the fisheye lens, the panohead, we think of the tripod. I already told you in this video about those basic tools to start in this world.
So our first photos will have 00:41 - a huge footprint at the nadir, like this one, the product of using the tripod with the legs extended, the column down and, well, some bad decisions that I also told you about in this other video in which It showed you how to reduce the nadir footprint from 42 to even 17 degrees. It turns out that we can go even further and to prove it, today I brought this interesting formula: the F360 Stick, made up of three parts: the carbon fiber pole, an ingenious ball-based tripod, and some weights. Although it seems that you can achieve the same with a traditional monopod, don’t be so sure. Look at this Manfrotto monopod. You might be tempted to buy it for your 360 photos. It will work for sure, but it won’t be as effective as the F360 stick… for three reasons: First, note that all monopods have a triangular shape where the thinnest part is on the ground and the thickest is right where you fix the camera.
This for sports photography, 01:37 - nature photography , for videography, is an advantage. But not for 360 photo. Why? Because you will have a very large nadir footprint. The F360 Stick just inverts the triangle, leaving all the weight at the base and the narrowest part at the top point. With this, more stability is achieved and, in turn, reduces the nadir footprint. Second: you could not leave your camera mounted on a monopod like this, because although it has small legs, these have a different functionality, for other types of photography.
This 02:10 - stability is achieved by the manufacturer of the F360 Stick, which is by the way called Freedom360, thanks to this peculiar base. The legs allow three levels of adjustment. These levels are a very interesting solution because they will allow you to place the camera in narrow places , such as stairs. Or extend them a bit to offer greater stability. The legs come with a rubber, ideal for use indoors or on hard surfaces. But tines can be adapted to stabilize it on soft surfaces. You could even put the mast nailing it into surfaces like sand, dirt or snow.
02:46 - Or even, if you rotate it, it will serve as a base to use with your 360 camera and a selfie stick like Insta’s. All these components are washable, so you can even use them under water. And the third difference of this kit when comparing it with the monopod, is the stability offered thanks to these legs. To explain it better, let’s think about this: is it possible to stabilize an egg? Have you asked yourself that question? You’ve tried? Although it seems like a difficult challenge, I invite you to try it. Look, an egg cannot be stabilized by a simple principle: the weight of the yolk, located in the center, causes it to fall to one side or the other. But…
what if we put the yolk at the 03:26 - bottom of the egg? Do it like this: give it a firm blow, so that the yolk detaches from the membrane. Don’t shake it. You will feel a sound when it comes off. Then you try to stop it and… magic! You already have a trick to win bets easily. Well, that same principle of egg stability has been applied by the designers of this kit: they include three stacked 500-gram weights, in such a way that when they are placed at the base of the mast, they have the same effect as the yolk of the egg. The configuration that I recommend you to get the most out of it is using ring panoheads. I’ll be using the R1, but coupled with this rotor, which was originally intended to be put on the base of the Nodal Ninja Pole.
For this exercise I simply reverse it and screw 04:12 - the R1 directly so that I can fit it to the tip of the Freedom 360’s neck Why this rotator? Because of all the Nodal Ninja rotators, it is the one with the smallest diameter. Look at this… I’m going to leave you in the description the complete list of all the equipment that I used for this video. Look at the result. I used the Sony a6300 camera with the Samyang 7.5mm. The Freedom360 staff with its legs and weights. We went from this footprint… of 42 degrees, to this minimum footprint, of 15 degrees, where really the only thing you are seeing is the base of the R1 panohead, nothing more. 15 degrees! Why is this difference so important? Because the smaller this footprint, the easier and faster the post- processing will be.
Removing this 05:01 - small footprint will be super easy. You could even automatically put your computer to work, to remove this imprint from hundreds of photos, thanks to the PTGui templates and this Photoshop action. From this I have a webinar that you can see in the Patron’s area and download all the templates. Also, in some projects, you might think about saving the whole process of removing the nadir. And so that that footprint does not come out, you are simply going to limit it.
If you limited 42 degrees, the viewable area would be 138 degrees vertical. While by limiting only 15 degrees, the viewable area will be 165, much of the floor will be seen, few will miss being able to turn all the way down… and you will have saved yourself a great deal of work. So, don’t get obsessed with the nadir, not all projects require that touch-up. Think about it! The Freedom360 Pole is solidly constructed of carbon fiber, which makes it super strong yet lightweight. It is quite a bit thicker than the Nodal Ninja Travel Pole, which gives me more security when I need to use it horizontally.
06:05 - This Pole like that, with the legs and the weights has a cost of 279 USD. I leave the link in the first comment, from the web where you can buy it, which is the Freedom360 store. For users of 360 cameras, this other combo, for $ 339, which additionally includes this quick- release mounting handle, might help It is super useful because it is usually risky to manipulate these cameras, when trying to screw them. They can fall, you can easily touch them with your fingers… well it’s not practical. You screw this little handle onto the camera and it comes with this mounting system so you can quickly attach and remove your camera, without risking it.
06:47 - Also for those with 360 cameras, this clamp is a very practical solution so that you can use the Pole in places where only your creativity will be the limit. See what this 360 video shot I have achieved using this clamp on my bike. Like if you liked this shot. Well, for the patrons of my channel I have obtained a 10% discount on this and all the products in this store. In the patrons area of I leave you the discount code, it is worth it because they are located in New York and they are the official distributors of Nodal Ninja. Then you will be able to get the entire Nodal Ninja repertoire with them, with a 10% discount.
07:30 - I hope this video has served you and if so, I invite you to see this other video from here right now, do not take off… Before you go, subscribe, click on the bell and like this video. I wait you here… .
