Hey everyone! My name is Abby Lyons and I’m going to show you how to play Drivers License by Olivia Rodrigo.
00:06 - I did a cover of the song if you would like to listen to it but it is in the minor key so it’s kind of spooky and just a little bit creepy. I’m going to leave a link up here to that.
00:16 - Definitely go check it out. I think it’s really cool.
00:19 - The version that I’m gonna show you though of course is the original version. It’s in the major key.
00:24 - And if you are one of my patrons then you can download the lead sheet for this song as well as use the playalong video so that you can practice the full thing along with me.
00:34 - So let’s learn how to play the song. So we’re going to be playing this version in a different key from the original version just so that we can use easier ukulele chords but if you want to play along with the original key you just have to put your capo on the third fret and then use the chords that we’re going to learn in this video.
00:51 - So we have just four chords for this song. The chords are G, then E minor, C, and D.
01:09 - First we’re going to learn the verse. Let’s look at the chord progression.
01:13 - We’re gonna start with two bars on G, then we have two bars on E minor, then two bars on C, and then we have just one more bar on G.
01:35 - For the strumming pattern we’re going to use down down down down up down down down down up and that’s gonna happen one time on each chord.
01:45 - Here’s how it sounds in the progression. We have G.
01:50 - Down down down down up down down down and G again.
01:57 - Now E minor. E minor again. Then C.
02:08 - And C one more time. And then we go to G just one time.
02:18 - And then that progression will get played a second time for the full verse.
02:23 - So here’s how it sounds with the words. ♪ I got my drivers license last week ♪ ♪ Just like we always talked about ♪ ♪ ‘Cause you were so excited for me ♪ ♪ To finally drive up to your house ♪.
02:40 - ♪ But today I drove through the suburbs ♪ ♪ Crying cause you weren’t around ♪ ♪ And you’re probably with that blonde girl ♪ ♪ Who always made me doubt ♪ ♪ She’s so much older than me ♪ ♪ She’s everything I’m insecure about ♪ ♪ Yeah, today I drove through the suburbs ♪ ♪ ‘Cause how could I ever love someone else ♪ So that’s the verse.
03:18 - Now we’re gonna learn how to play the chorus.
03:20 - So the chord progression starts with two bars on C and then just one bar on G, and then that much gets repeated.
03:33 - Two on C and then just one on G. So let’s add in the strumming pattern.
03:41 - We have one full strum on each chord. So first C.
03:48 - And C again. Then G. Now back to C.
03:59 - C again. And now G. So that’s the first half of our chord progression.
04:10 - Now in this next part we’re mostly going to just be playing one strum on each chord.
04:15 - So we start with E minor, then D, then G, and then D.
04:27 - So just that much. We’re gonna be doing two beats on each chord, so they go a little bit quickly.
04:33 - We have one two, one two, one two, one two and then we’re gonna go to C and we’ll go back to the regular strum.
04:44 - So down down down down up down down down down up.
04:51 - So just that line is one two, one two, one two, one two, down down down down up down down down down up.
05:04 - And then for the last line of the chorus chord progression we again are going to do one strum on each chord but this time we hold for four beats on each chord so it’s going to go a little slower.
05:15 - So in that last line we have C, D, and G. So with the counting it’s one two three four, one two three four, one two three four. So now let’s put together the whole chorus with the words.
05:36 - Here’s what it sounds like. ♪ And I know we weren’t perfect but I’ve never felt this way for no one ♪ ♪ And I just can’t imagine how you could be so okay now that I’m gone ♪ ♪ Guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me ♪ ♪ ‘Cause you said forever now I drive alone past your street ♪ And that’s the chorus.
06:17 - Now we’re gonna learn how to play the bridge.
06:19 - Our chord progression is just E minor, C, G, and D.
06:29 - We’ll do a full strumming pattern on each chord.
06:32 - So here’s how that sounds… sounds. [laughs] E minor, then C, G and D.
06:50 - And that’s gonna happen four times all together for the bridge.
06:53 - So here’s what it sounds like with the words.
06:56 - ♪ Red lights, stop signs ♪ ♪ I still see your face in the white cars, front yards ♪ ♪ Can’t drive past the places we used to go to ♪ ♪ ‘Cause I still really love you babe ♪ ♪ Oooooooh ♪ ♪ Sidewalks we crossed ♪ ♪ I still hear your voice in the traffic, we’re laughing ♪ ♪ Over all the noise ♪ ♪ God I’m so blue know we’re through ♪ ♪ But I still really love you babe ♪ ♪ Oooooooh ♪ So that’s the bridge and that’s how you play Drivers License by Olivia Rodrigo.
