Today, we are going to Baljeet Ji’s house in Kareri to meet Pogo. Kareri is a small village located 22kms from Peepal Farm. It’s inhabited by Gaddi people. Gaddis are traditionally shepherds. It has gotten connected via a proper road only a few years ago. Still, the road is a bit dicey in a few places. I was praying to Hanuman in those parts :) Hanuman saves from all adversities, those who remember him.
00:30 - From the last motorable point, Baljeet’s house is a 30 minute trek. Now the lifestyle here is a mix of traditional and modern. Marriage parties have a full DJ system… …but everything is carried manually on backs! Baljeet is not at home… …but Karan is taking us to meet Pogo. When Baljeet took Pogo from Peepal Farm a few months ago… …Pogo had really bad skin. Just before that Veronica had brought Pogo to Peepal Farm. When Veronica had found Pogo… …he had wounds all over.
01:07 - His paws were swollen, and he was very weak. Veronica runs an animal rescue in Palampur, but she didn’t have enough space. Taking one look at Pogo, Veronica could see that he was an abandoned pet. His owner must have been a horrible person… …as not only he left Pogo to die on the streets… …but he also had cut Pogo’s ears :( Some people who want their dog’s ears to look like a dish antenna, do this. They don’t consider how painful it must be for their dog. This practice is called ear docking, and it is illegal. I think these people have some inferiority complex which they are trying to compensate. During his treatment and medicated baths… …Pogo looked at us, as if asking a question… “Why did this happen to me?” If he could talk, he probably would have said this too… “You call us animals, but there’s no one more savage than man himself.
” 02:10 - Baljeet saw Pogo’s adoption post on Peepal Farm Instagram. He came down to meet Pogo. He decided to adopt Pogo almost right away. Compared to homes, in shelters, dogs stay stressed, so recovery is slower. We asked Baljeet if he will be able to continue Pogo’s treatment at home. Dr. Ankit also said that Pogo will recover faster in a cooler place. Mostly animals leave the farm only once they have fully recovered… …so this is why we had to go to Kareri, to meet Pogo for a final check up. Pogo has fully recovered now. His wounds have healed. His personality has also developed. He was very happy to see us! He played with us. He also took us around his village. Getting Baljeet’s love, he is also mostly over his mental trauma. But even still, when I touched his ears…he yelped remembering his trauma. Hopefully, with time he will get over that. Baljeet leads a peaceful life.
03:26 - Probably because he is among those people who… …put helping others over their self interest. Some people bring a dog for showing off, or guarding their house… …or to fulfill their desire. And that’s why they care a lot what the dog looks like. But Baljeet didn’t bring Pogo to his home to fulfill his need. He brought Pogo to his home as Pogo needed a home and love. .
