Our flight over the Danube in 1570 starts 7 km upstream from historical Vienna. Elaborate hydraulic constructions deflect the flow towards the city. Bifurcation of new ‘Wolfs arm’ (left) and old ‘Tabor arm’ (right) The upper ‘Tabor arm’ later transformed to today’s ‘Donaukanal’. Toll station ‘Neuer Tabor’ at the ‘Tabor bridge’ (left) between ‘Tabor arm’ and today’s ‘Donaukanal’ (middle). We pass the ‘Untere Werd’ (Leopoldstadt) on the left and Vienna with its fortification on the right.

01:11 - After the confluence of the ‘Wienfluss’ (right) we turn towards the ‘Prater’ floodplain. Today’s ‘Prater Hauptallee’ was originally called ‘Langer Gang’. The ‘Seeschlacht’ branches off from the precursor of today’s ‘Donaukanal’ (right). Turning back we see the junction of the ‘Wiener Arm’ (‘Donaukanal’) with the Danube. Here, we turn around and proceed with our flight upstream. Between 1972 and 1988, the island ‘Donauinsel’ and the flood-bypass canal ‘Neue Donau’ were created in this area. This section of the northern Danube arm was called ‘Schwarze Lacke’ in the 16th/17th century. At the junction of the ‘Tabor arm’ (left) and ‘Wolfs arm’ (right) we follow the latter. Passing the remains of the old bridge that was finally destroyed in 1566. We finish our flight at the new ‘Wolfs bridge’. Hohensinner et al. (2016) - IHG/BOKU Vienna .
