The Caribou-Poker Creek’s Research Watershed Terrestrial Field Site is located 35 minutes north of Fairbanks in Central Alaska, and covers an area of about 104 square kilometers. This NEON site consists of boreal forest and wetlands sitting on top of a discontinuous layer of permafrost. Scientific data has been collected in the watershed from as far back as the 1970s, with research focusing on how watersheds are influenced by wildfires, discontinuous permafrost, and climate change. It features a 56 foot tall flux tower that collects meteorological data, along with defined plots for soil, vegetation, bird, mammal, and insect observations and sampling. .
