Hello everybody! In this video, I’m going to show you how to run a Windows operating system on a Mac computer. How to install and configure a virtual machine, and how to use Windows-designed software on MacOS. Also, you will see how to recover lost information from a Mac device with the help of Hetman Partition Recovery. Many people who are used to working in Windows find it hard to get accustomed to a new operating system when they buy an Apple computer. In addition to unusual controls and numerous functional differences, they may also feel unhappy because there considerably less programs, games and utilities developed for macOS specifically.

01:17 - Actually, many software developers offer their products in two versions, for Windows and MacOS. Also, if a program you need doesn’t work with a specific operating system, you can find a tool with similar functionality, and those are aplenty. But still there are cases when a software tool you used to enjoy in Windows has no MacOS version, there are no similar tools, or they don’t meet your requirements exactly. This is one of the reasons that makes some users install Windows on a Mac device. It can be done either with the system utility called Boot Camp, or by adding a virtual machine.

01:52 - Installing Windows on a Mac with Boot Camp If you need to install Windows on your Mac, this could be the best solution. After the installation, you’ll be able to use Windows with all of its features, while physically, it’s still a Mac computer. The first and the most serious disadvantage of installing Windows with Boot Camp is that you will have to restart the computer in order to choose which operating system to boot - Windows or MacOS. The first step to take before you proceed with installation is to download an image of the Windows operating system. Before doing that, find out which version your Mac computer can support.

02:31 - The models compatible with Windows 10 are listed on the screen: MacBook Pro (2012 and newer) MacBook Air (2012 and newer) MacBook (2015 and newer) iMac Pro (2017) iMac (2012 and newer) * Mac mini (2012 and newer) Mac mini Server (late 2012 model) Mac Pro (late 2013 model) If your computer is older than anything on this list, you will be able to install Windows 7. You can download an ISO image of the Windows operating system from the Microsoft website. When the ISO image is downloaded, you can begin the installation. Here is what you do: Step 1. Click on Launchpad, open “Other” and run Boot Camp Assistant. Step 2. In the window that opens, hit “Continue.” Boot Camp should find the ISO file automatically. If it doesn’t, give the path manually.

03:33 - Click on this button, browse to the folder containing the operating system image, click on it and then click OK. Step 3. Drag the slider to the left to extend the disk for Windows. Click “Install” when the appropriate disk size is selected. After that, the process of booting software to support Windows will start. To allow making changes, enter your password and hit OK. The computer will restart, and you will see the installation window. Install the operating system by following the directions on your screen. Select the language you prefer. Enter the product key or click on “I don’t have a product key.” Specify the version of the operating system. When choosing the disk to install to, don’t select any other partitions except for BOOTCAMP, and don’t create or modify any other partitions.

04:37 - Such actions will remove all contents of the MacOS disks and you will lose all the data. Finish the installation process. If you have any questions while installing Windows, I’ll give the link to a corresponding video guide below. After the computer restarts, it will boot in Windows. To have it boot in MacOS again, you need to restart the computer one more time. If the operating system you need didn’t boot, hold down the “Option” button when restarting and select the operating system to boot in the corresponding window.

05:12 - Now your Mac device has a full-featured Windows operating system that you can boot any time. This will enable you to download, install and run any application which is not available for MacOS. How to set up a Parallels virtual machine In order to avoid having to restart the computer all the time, you may choose to install a Parallels virtual machine instead. This is a commercial tool, but it has a trial period of 15 days. This method doesn’t require the computer to restart, as it is launched with a special utility from under MacOS.

05:42 - The advantage of installing and using Windows on a virtual machine is the interaction between both operating systems - they can use the same clipboard, and you can move files from one system to another. The downside is the extra load on the computer’s CPU and memory, as they have to handle two operating systems at the same time, so they both suffer from reduced performance and poor responsiveness. Step 1. Start Parallels Desktop. To create a new virtual machine, press the key shortcut ⌘Cmd + N. Step 2. Select “Install Windows or another OS from a DVD or image file” and click “Continue.” Step 3. The program will find the operating system image automatically.

06:30 - If it doesn’t, click “Choose manually” and specify the source file for installation. Step 4. When asked for a license key, enter it into the corresponding field or uncheck the box. Step 5. Specify the version of the operating system. Choose the purpose you want to use this operating system for, and click here to continue. Step 6. Specify the name and location of the virtual machine, and click “Create.” Step 7. After that, the Windows installation will start. When it’s done, you will get a virtual machine running a full- featured Windows. To run it, select it from the list and start. How to recover lost data with Hetman Partition Recovery Now you can run any program for Windows, which would be otherwise inaccessible from MacOS. For example, you can easily recover lost data with the help of Hetman Partition Recovery - which is only available for Windows at the moment.

07:45 - You can do it either from Boot Camp or from Parallels virtual machine. There is one downside to Parallels: this utility cannot access the disk where MacOS is installed. On the contrary, Boot Camp has no problems with that and can recognize the system disk with the operating system. In order to recover the lost data, do the following: Step 1. Download, install and run Hetman Partition Recovery on the Windows operating system in Boot Camp or in Parallels virtual machine.

08:15 - With our program, you will be able to recover data from any removable drive, a physical hard disk or SSD. Although, there may be difficulties in recovering files from protected drives and SSDs where the TRIM feature is enabled; also, our tool cannot recover data from encrypted storage devices. Step 2. In the Drive Manager, select the storage device, right-click on it and choose “Open.” If this is a USB drive or a removable hard disk, make sure to connect it to the computer first. If you are using Parallels, when a removable device is connected, the operating system will suggest you to choose which one to connect it to; if you select Windows, the device will be displayed in the explorer immediately.

09:03 - Run a fast scan first - it will take less time. If the fast scan can’t find the deleted data, then go for Full analysis. Step 3. The file recovery wizard will scan the selected volume immediately and display the scan results in the right side of the program’s window. Step 4. When the scan is over, select the deleted files you want to restore and then click the “Recovery” button. Specify where to save the data and click “Recovery” again.

09:34 - Also, there is a feature to create a disk image and then conduct all recovery operations with such image. This step significantly increases the chances for successful recovery because multiple rounds of scanning may result in data overwriting. Hetman Partition Recovery can be used in the following cases: To recover files lost after removing or formatting partitions, after disk repartitioning, system errors, virus attacks and other scenarios that involve loss of data. To recover data from internal and external hard disks, USB storage devices, SD memory cards, cameras and other devices used to store information. And to recover lost photos, videos, music, documents and other file types.

10:28 - If you use Parallels to start a Windows OS on a Mac computer, you should remember that this virtual machine doesn’t allow you to access the disk where MacOS is installed. If you need to recover data from such disk, I’d recommend installing Windows with Boot Camp. If the disk is not encrypted, you will have no difficulty in restoring the lost data from the disk where MacOS is installed. There is one important thing to keep in mind. Most likely, you won’t be able to recover data from an SSD with the TRIM feature enabled.

10:59 - When TRIM is on, the operating system cleans the memory cells, which are currently not in use, before any data is written there. This helps to reduce data access time and improves SSD performance, but makes data recovery process way more complicated. So when you are intent to recover some stuff, remember this peculiarity.
