I am not a big fan of windows tuning tools who are very intrusive and does not offer a real advantage like the C cleaner. But what do you do if your hard drive is at its limit and you have to free up some storage? In this video I will show you an alternative approach to this problem. My first tip is to open up the list with all installed programs. You can now see the occupied storage space of each application and if you do not need it anymore you can just uninstall it. The second tip is to open up the windows cleaner by pressing the win an “r” key at the same time and enter the shortcut for this application.
00:56 - You will also find it in the video description. As soon as it opens up you should press the button “clean up system files”. This makes sure that all files are considered. It now rescans all files, this may take a while. By selecting “more options” you can clean up the windows restore points. It will delete all restore points except the newest one. Now back to the first tab. In this menu I always select everything. Nevertheless, there is a critical point: the downloads folder is part of this list. Be sure to not have any important files there. They will be deleted. You can see that 3 gigabyte will be freed. The largest part are old windows update files.
01:49 - But what if this still does not help? Well you should now analyse which folder consumes the most space. Unfortunately, windows does not offer an easy option to do this. Therefore, I recommend using the program TreeSize Free Portable. There is no need to install it and as soon as it has helped you be finding large files you can just remove it. Check the link in the video description. Open it up and run it again as administrator. This makes sure that TreeSize can access all files. You can now scan your entire hard drive. You will see a list which is sorted according to the folder size. Do not touch the windows folder! Let the windows cleaner do its job! The users folder is populated with files you may have placed there. So lets take a look. By following the biggest folder, I can now find out that there are some large files in the music folder. As you may have already noticed, this is of course made up for this video.
03:07 - With a right click you can now open an explorer window in this folder and check if the files are still necessary or if they can be deleted. I will delete them and trigger a new scan in TreeSize. You should only delete files if you placed them there and you should always think of the consequences of deleting necessary system files. If you are unsure, a quick google search may help out. If you have other tips on how to free up disk space in windows, please let us know in the comments.
