!!Con West 2020 - Vaibhav Sagar: Compilers for nothing, executables for free!

So I have a problem. And my problem is that I use Vim. (laughter) And to get Vim to do anything remotely fancy or customize it to my needs, I need a vimrc. And every time Vim lags with a large file or it’s just a bit slower than I would like, I keep thinking how like… I don’t really need my Vim to handle every possible vimrc.

!!Con West 2020 - Opening Remarks, day 2

Hello! Good morning, everyone! How are you doing? (applause) Good! Cool! Awesome! We have one more day of exciting talks. And I’ll do some housekeeping, some announcements, so first of all, I would like to thank our sponsors. Without them, this wouldn’t be possible. We’re very, very grateful for the generous support. Second, if you can, you should donate to the UCSC Strike Fund. Maggie has put up a sign outside where she’ll be matching donations up to $500, and there are details of how you can help contribute.

!!Con West 2020 - Jordan Hendricks: Tex-Mex and malloc(3C): Restaurant Hosts and Memory Allocators!

Okay. So yeah. This is Tex-Mex and malloc3C(). The problems that restaurant hosts and reallocators share. My name is Jordan. I’m a software engineer. I have a lot of interests in systems software in particular. So operating systems, distributed systems. But my very first job was actually working as a restaurant hostess in a Tex-Mex restaurant. Surprise. And this job taught me a lot, and I got really good at seating people from a wait to tables as people left and I think about this problem all the time, because it’s kind of hard.

!!Con West 2020 - Michelle Brenner: How To Host A Podcast For 25 Cents A Month!

Alright. So I host this podcast called From the Source. Where I interview people working in tech, and I focus on underrepresented voices, and to answer the question of what a tech job really is like, both the good, the bad, and the boring. So when I wanted to do this project, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money. So that’s how I came up with this idea.

!!Con West 2020 - Phil Warren: Beyond the Black Rainbow: Using Booleans to Photograph IR Rainbows!

Hi. I’m Phil Warren. I’m a research engineer who works in the field of imagery, both capture and display, and when I’m not in the lab, I do the exact same thing, but with my own cameras, and I would like to share with you a novel exploration I’ve been working on. Imagine a rainbow. Actually, you don’t need to imagine it. I’ll show you. This is a pretty good representation of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible light.

!!Con West 2020 - Spencer Alves: Reverse engineering game formats for fun and profit! (or just fun)

Okay. Hi! So I have a lot of stuff to go through. So I hope that you’ve read the summary on the website. Quick disclaimer before we get started: Most of my experience is with games with file systems. So games on discs, or downloadable PC games. That’s not to say that none of this is applicable to, you know, games on cartridges or even things that aren’t games.

!!Con West 2020 - isis agora lovecruft: big number small computer

Hi, I’m isis agora lovecruft. My pronouns are they/them. Once upon a time, I was a theoretical physicist, specializing in quantum and string cosmologies. But one day, a fairy princess came and kissed me on the nose and the curse was lifted. (laughter) Or I was doubly cursed, because now I’m a cryptographer. There’s this thing that happens sometimes; when I tell this to cute people at parties, they get really excited.

    !!Con West 2020: Closing remarks

Do I have a microphone? I do. All right. Always bad news when you give me a microphone. No, I’m kidding. Thanks for coming. I have some prepared remarks. But the worst case scenario is that I’m gonna ad lib, and that’s about what’s gonna happen. I don’t know. I feel like there’s been this theme today of empowerment. So we started off with Erin’s talk. In which she told us about the kind of consequence of disempowerment, of not being able to control your computing environment, and what happens when people are no longer – when people – this keeps resonating in my head.
