On April 29th, a mile-long asteroid will make a close approach to Earth as it passes safely by. There’s no need to worry, this asteroid will not even come close to hitting Earth. Our solar system is actually littered with asteroids and comets and sometimes they do come very close to Earth. When an asteroid or comet could one day come close to our planet, it’s known as a near-Earth object.

Swimming in plastic | ASU KEDtalk

[MUSIC PLAYING] CHARLES ROLSKY: Hi, I’m Charlie. I’m a PhD student at Arizona State University so naturally, I study the ocean. Which is kind of impossible. It’s huge. We have zero control over it. And we are completely out of our element while in it. We can pack up and load out on a boat to go collect some samples and, in the blink of an eye, rough ocean conditions or bad weather can completely derail any plans for fieldwork.

Scientists get creative to save living collections

What happens to a scientist’s tsetse fly collection during a pandemic? Living collections that hold everything from plants to viruses require a lot of time and technical skill to preserve. In a time of social distancing, that becomes much harder. To keep collections going, scientists appear to be taking two approaches: putting collections into hibernation or bringing them home. A group of scientists who maintain 900 strains of fungi at West Virginia University has carefully planned maintenance with the minimum number of visits to the greenhouse.

Contractible trumpets - HABITANTES DEL MICROMUNDO

Stentor is a very special ciliate. Its trumpet-like shape, with the ciliated Crown on its anterior region makes him easily recognizable, and its size (can reach 2 mm in length) makes him stand out from the other tiny protozoans. One of the more studied characteristics of Stentor is its extraordinary speed of contraction, measured in about 15 milliseconds. Such amazing speed of contraction allows Stentor to literally disappear when some danger is detected in the surroundings of the cell.

    Energy coaching for business

[music] -We had an energy coaching and site visit here at Molong RSL Club which I found very informative. One of the things that I found interesting was seeing if the cool rooms were running at the right temperature which will save you money as well. The energy coaching and site visit is free so you should use it. Any savings on energy could be used to update the club for the patrons.
